Fall Camping

While summer is still in full swing, we can’t help but think of fall camping that will be here before you know it.  Fall is our favorite camping season.  So is Summer, and Spring and Winter are good too.  Because we LOVE camping, we want everyone else to love it as much as we do. So, we are sharing some good advice for fall camping.

Don’t Mail it In

Some see Fall camping as ‘one last trip of the season’ and therefore spend less prep time planning their fall trip. Don’t fall for that.  Plan your fall trip carefully as much can change in a few weeks.  Also, if you’re camping with kids, make sure you’ve got a good trip planned for some quality family time.

Dress for ANYTHING

True, all times of the year could see temperature and weather swings, but the fall can be notorious for warm/hot days and surprising cold nights.  Pack for four seasons, we say.  If some rain rolls in, you’ll be happy to have the right gear.  And when it does get cold, that extra jacket or blanket will come in handy.  Check the weather but still pack for anything.

Location, Location, Location.

Not all camping spots are created equal. Your favorite summer spot might be different in the fall. Also, wildlife patterns could impact the places that are safe and available.  Before you set out to camp, do your homework and make sure the spot you have in mind is going to work for your fall trip.  And, as always, be respectful and ‘leave no trace.

Be Mindful of Time

While it may seem like time stands still when you’re out camping, you should be aware of shifting daylight hours and how this could impact your activities.  Days are getting shorter.  A summer hike might not fit into a fall day, so plan accordingly, and you won’t get caught in the dark.

Speaking of time…as the weather turns colder, cooking and heating may take longer — plan to cook while the sun is up or bring along a headlamp.  Timing will also have an impact on the resources you bring to cook and keep you warm.  Take along some extra fuel (firewood, chargers, propane, etc.).

Stay Warm and Safe

As you are heating your food and your space, make sure you have safety front of mind.  Keep an eye on campfires and propane heaters.  Double-check everything before you nod off and make sure your indoor heat source is in good working order and is indoor rated.  Again, this is a good tip for all seasons, but if you’ve been out of practice all season, it’s a good reminder.

HAVE FUN!

You can still have TONS of fun fall camping.  Hot chocolate and snuggling up by the campfire is a special occasion that you rarely see in the summer months.  Also, as the seasons change, there is different scenery to take in.
