March 20th marked the first day of spring, and If you’ve spent your “shelter-in-place” time logging miles on your Peloton, now is the perfect time to dust off your actual bike, stretch those muscles and take in the great scenery! We’ve put together a few resources for places that you and your buddies can plan for some great camping and biking.
Moab, of course, is on just about every biking enthusiasts list of great places to ride in spring, and if you haven’t been there it should move straight to the top of your bucket list. There are rides for every level of experience, and the spring temperatures and desert scenery can’t be beat – past May temperatures can soar into undesirable temperatures. It’s become a more and more popular destination in recent years that has led to some crowding, especially on weekends and holidays, so you may want to secure your campsite by arriving on a weekday. Check in here before you head out to find out any COVID-19 restrictions and limitations are still in effect.
Another great spot is Wyoming. The Jackson Hole Valley has more than 115 miles of mountain bike trails, and 56 miles of paved trails for a more family friendly biking experience. Trails from Teton Village to Jackson Hole are famous for great scenery, and riding with views of the Grand Tetons or the Snake River is an experience like no other.
Beautiful California boasts thousands of coastal bike trails in the state. And between northern and southern the scenery is amazing. Check out this site for some guidance about where you and your two wheels can find the best spot for your tastes. If you’re a mountain biker with a lot of experience, be sure to visit the trail that puts the down in Downieville and sports some of the best single track riding in the world.
Looking for something a little less traveled? Check out Fodor’s list of some of the most scenic spots in the US. While there are some well-known trails on this list, it also offers some in unexpected places, too. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to enjoy a solitary ride and take it all in without a crowd!
And of course, in Colorado there are seemingly endless opportunities for beginners and experienced riders alike. Just outside of Denver, Waterton Canyon is a great start for those wanting an easy ride or those biking with the kiddos. For those wanting to build their single track chops, continue on to the Colorado Trail Loop, which is still very ridable but a little more difficult. Other great trails near Denver can be found in Evergreen, Nederland, and Monument.
For those wanting to venture further into the mountains, check out fantastic trails like the Peak Trail – Breckenridge to Frisco, or travel to the Western Slope, like Fruita, the Roaring Fork Valley, or Crested Butte (altitude alert!). If Colorado doesn’t have it, you probably don’t need it!
How ever you enjoy biking don’t forget to be safe…wear your helmet, stay aware of your surroundings and do your homework about your destination before you head out.
Happy biking!
