What Makes Colorado Teardrops Different

Teardrop campers first hit the market in the 1930s and since then they have developed a robust and loyal following.  The teardrop has also been known for being lightweight and compact. At Colorado Teardrops we want to keep that feel and still expand with superior construction and details that you’ll love.  Owner and founder, Dean Wiltshire, decided to embark on his teardrop-making career after a chilly night out camping coupled with a bear sighting made him look for alternatives to tents and sleeping bags.  Read more about Dean here.

How we build

We love the look and feel of a teardrop camper. And while we don’t think we could ever improve on that; Colorado Teardrops is committed to top-quality construction and durability.  We’ve chosen to construct campers out of upgraded material without adding exorbitant cost to consumer and weight to the camper. For years, plywood was the standard for construction.  We thought we could do better while still offering sustainable materials. In building our campers, we use aluminum (recycled and recyclable), partially recycled HDPE plastic – which has a high strength-to-density ratio. On the interior, we use low VOC non-formaldehyde plywood, Birch, Beetle kill, or blue pine. We also use stronger and lighter structural aluminum for cabin construction.  Given the way its made, there is no reason why your Colorado Teardrop can’t be with you for decades. In our four and a half years in business we mainly see trade-ins as our clients seek to upgrade models for more features or bigger space.  Every camper we produce is constructed by hand in our shop in Boulder.  We’d love to show you around sometime.

How we innovate

Our workshop is a model of efficiency and craftsmanship as we’ve embraced “lean manufacturing.”  Lean manufacturing refers to a particular practice and system of order where we assemble each part of the trailer as we need it. Your camper is literally put together as it moves through our shop. This process has allowed us to advance from making 2 trailers a month to 2 trailers a week with a capacity to double that still.  We studied our process and sought ways to minimize waste without sacrificing quality and productivity.  We literally discovered best practices to keep us working smarter not harder.  All of our campers are made by our team in our shop in Boulder, Colorado.  Quality products and expert craftsmanship means a superior camper at a better price point.

How we deliver

We’ve heard from some of our clients about long wait times and disappointments with other campers. We make a practice of only taking orders that we intend to fill within 90 days.  And in some cases, we might have a rental available for you to scratch that teardrop itch while you wait.  We also want to deliver news and updates to you as they come on line.  We provide various updates throughout the process to keep you in the loop with your Colorado Teardrop camper.  We also invite everyone to keep in touch via email, phone or even stopping in for a visit.  We are proud of what we are producing, and we want to deliver on every level.

How we connect

Once your Colorado Teardrop is delivered, its not over. As we continue to tell our story, we want to hear yours too. Tell us about latest adventure, ask questions, show us pictures of your trips and let us know how you’re enjoying outdoor life.  Look for us on social media (links), keep in touch by phone or email or make plans to come and see us in action.  And if you’re just starting your quest for a new camper, we hope you’ll let us help you.
